What Are Varicose and Spider Veins?
Varicose and Spider Veins are veins that have become enlarged. The term usually refers to the veins on the leg, although varicose veins can occur in other areas as well. Veins have valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards. Leg muscles pump the veins blood in these veins, fighting gravity to return blood to the heart. This allows blood to flow backwards and they enlarge even more. Sometimes these valves malfunction making it difficult to push the blood towards the heart, and sometimes the blood even flows backwards cuasing swelling and varicose veins. These veins are subjected to high pressure when standing. Varicose veins are often painful, especially when standing or walking.
Varicose veins, clinically called “varicosities”, represent enlarged branches of the blood flow system in the legs. Varicosities are the symptoms of a disease called superficial venous insufficiency of lower extremities. Heaviness, tiredness, swelling, pain, muscle cramps, difficulties walking and even standing are some of other symptoms of the above disease.
